Behind the Lens

My name is Scott Rolph and I welcome you to my website. I have had a passion for photography for many years and I am proud to present my best images on this site. I grew up in Inverell, New South Wales and most recently lived in beautiful Ballina . I have had the privilege of travelling across much of Australia and have come to appreciate the beauty of our country.

One of my first jobs was working as a Lab Assistant in a Toowoomba camera store which gave me great experience in the printing and developing areas as well as learning about cameras.

Photography runs through my family's veins as my late father was a well-respected Wedding Photographer. My earliest memories comprise of hours spent in Dad's darkroom at home, I found this to be a fascinating process and remember the smell of the chemicals and the excitement of seeing the image come to life before your very eyes. This is probably where my love of photography was born.

My brothers are also talented when it comes to photography. My eldest brother Michael is based in Sydney and he has a fantastic collection of seascape images available for purchase on his website. You can view his work at Girt By Sea Photography.

I have recently moved to Geelong, Victoria. I look forward to exploring this State and developing my photographic library further.

It gives me great pleasure spending time in the great outdoors and exploring Australia’s National Parks and photographing our diverse and unique flora and fauna. I have a particular interest in bird photography and my photo library is growing by the day. Whilst this can be a frustrating hobby it is extremely rewarding when you capture a great shot after waiting for hours in the same spot.

My first SLR camera was a film based Pentax MZ50 which allowed me develop an understanding of the staple photographic techniques required to be a professional photographer. I do miss the excitement of having my film developed and opening the packet at the lab in anticipation. I reluctantly progressed into the digital age with a Pentax K20D, which served me well and allowed me to experiment and develop my skills further. I have recently upgraded to a full frame Nikon digital SLR with professional standard Nikon lenses which allow me to produce high quality enlargements. My current kit comprises of the following:

Nikon D800E Scott
Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR
Nikkor Micro 105mm AF-S VR f/2.8G IF-ED
Lee Filter System
Manfrotto Tripod
Sandisk Extreme Pro Memory Cards
Lowepro Camera Bag
